As a small business owner and woman, the uncertainty around elections brings up many emotions—anxiety, worry, fear of what might change, and concern for how policy shifts could impact our businesses, our families, and our communities. Owning a business adds an extra layer of pressure when it comes to election season. Decisions made at every level of government can impact our ability to provide for our families, serve our communities, and sustain what we’ve built. As a woman, there’s also the added concern of how policies might affect women-owned businesses, equity, healthcare, and more. It’s easy to feel powerless and overwhelmed, but there are ways we can reclaim our power, manage stress, and support our mental well-being.

1. Focus on What You Can Control

When anxiety creeps in, it’s often because we’re focused on “what-ifs” outside of our control. Instead, let’s bring our attention to what we can control. As a small business owner, you have the power to make a difference in your community by providing jobs, fostering inclusivity, and creating a supportive environment for customers and employees alike.
