Why Therapists Need Therapists (and How I Can Help)

Let’s start with a confession: therapists are human too. Shocking, I know. We have emotions, messy lives, and that pesky thing called self-doubt. As much as we’re trained to hold space for others, therapists need someone to hold space for us too. After all, it’s hard to help someone else put on their emotional oxygen mask when we’re gasping for air.

The Real Talk: Why Therapists Need Therapists

  1. Emotional Overload: Sitting with others' pain day after day can take a toll. Even the most Zen therapist occasionally dreams of running off to a deserted island (preferably with Wi-Fi for Netflix).

  2. Avoiding Burnout: To be fully present for our clients, we need to refuel. Otherwise, we risk turning into the equivalent of a flat soda—technically functional but not enjoyable.

  3. Personal Growth: Therapists are lifelong learners. Therapy helps us gain insights into our own blind spots and biases, ensuring we continue to grow personally and professionally.

The Silver Lining (and Silver Lake Counseling)

As a therapist, I get what it’s like to navigate the dual roles of professional caregiver and individual human being. At Silver Lake Counseling in Fenton, MI, I offer a safe, nonjudgmental space where you can drop the “therapist hat” and just be you. Whether you need help processing work stress, managing your personal relationships, or just want someone who understands what it’s like to carry the weight of others’ emotions, I’m here for you.

Why Humor Helps

Let’s face it: therapy can be heavy, and life doesn’t come with a laugh track. But adding humor to the process can lighten the load. In my sessions, I welcome humor as a healing tool—it’s like mental floss for the brain. So, yes, we’ll dive into the deep stuff, but we’ll also find moments to laugh at the absurdity of life.
